WELLS/NEW YORK stoneware inkwell.
Accented in a dark blue wash on the very top and part way down the sides.
Maker's mark is in four lines on the side, this is the early Crolius mark.
There is an old separation crack up from the base, thru the side and extending
across to the middle hole on the top. Surface roughness at the rim and base.
There is a minor break in one of the four ink holes.1 1/2" X 4 1/2"

M. TYLER ALBANY MANUFACTURER Stoneware
inkwell. Deeply impressed scribe lines and potter's mark are blue accented on
the very top. The piece is impressed a second time, "M. TYLER ALBANY" on the
side at the base. There are 3 ink holes.
There are a couple of surface chips at the base under the glaze. There is
something inside this piece but we have no idea what it is, perhaps a stoneware
shard. Excellent.

There is a very old chip at the spout on the left side, clay separation at
the base and a stone ping at the shoulder on the front occurred when made. Nice
example of one of New York's first potters.

Gallon designation is in the center of the palm. Additional blue accents at
the handle and deeply impressed name. Rare design to say the least. Nice

gallon ovoid crock. Incised and blue accented bird on a large leaf. Detailed
with many scribed lines in the body. Maker's mark is impressed and blue accented
on the opposite side.
There is a chip at the rim just above the maker's name. Other minor surface
wear around the rim. Somewhat dry glaze occurred in the making. Very rare short
lived Utica Factory mark.

and blue filled bird on branch décor.
Long neck and swooping tail on this bird. Thought to be an undocumented early
Ohio potter. Incised designs on Midwest stoneware are very rare. Stack mark just
touching the design and overall dry glaze occurred in the making.

The maker's mark in stamped and blued in a circle. Very rare size and form
for this factory as they were better known for their 3 & 4 gallon jar forms.

Unsigned approximate pint size stoneware
crock with applied loop handles.
Watch spring designs are repeated on the front and back with additional blue
accents at the handles. Decoration and form can be attributed to James Morgan,
Jr, Cheesequake, New Jersey. Never have seen one of this small size. There is a
tight clay separation line that runs along the bottom and up on either side that
occurred in the making.

The first - H. HEISER BUFFALO NY 2 gallon cream pot. Impressed maker's mark
is blue accented. Olive green clay color in the making. Amateur restoration to a
circle shaped hairline on the very back and running thru the bottom. Short
hairline up from the base on the front. 7". 1856. Rare mark.
The second - Unsigned footed cream pot in an overall brown Albany glaze.
Inscribed on the front, "J. M. Loomis". There is a tight thru line down from the
rim on the front and another one up from the base under the right ear. 8 1/2"

JS
was a soldier born in Geneseo, NY in 1807. In 1862 he was the unsuccessful
candidate for governor of NY state. Political campaign slogans on stoneware are
extremely rare. This one is a great example.
There is some very minor surface chipping and minor hairlines at the rim.

glaze. Stone ping on the front occurred in the making. 7" 1856
The second - JOHNSON & KNAPP OLEAN NY 2 gallon crock with brushed and slip
decorated blue flower. Interior lime staining and a tight crack down from the
rim in front of the left ear. There is also a large quarter size interior rim
chip above the right ear. 8 1/2". 1875.
Both of these pieces are examples of short lived American potteries. |
