$700 | M. WOODRUFF CORTLAND 6 gallon cream pot. The following
description is from the 1986 3 BEHRS Stoneware Catalog from which it was
purchased. This large, ovoid, sand-beige jar contains the quizzical face of a
large cat…bearded, be-whiskered and ever curious, he stares out at us with
concentric eyes…(Now Hear this!!! this fellow suffered for a long time with an
un-slightly pitting problem that was pretty much confined to the upper 1/2 of
the jar. So repairs, and then restorations were made to the entire upper half of the piece from the cat's nose upward, including the upper half of the blue, and the signature)…This is indeed, an extensive restoration and it was done be an expert, using existing Cortland date designs as a guide. The design, and the jar were well worth the preservation effort. A large cat like this, in good condition, would cost about $2000+So, this would certainly be a great addition to any collection at the very reasonable price of only $635.00 15" 1860 |

$800 | HUMISTON & STOCKWELL. S. AMBOY, NJ
3 gallon ovoid jug with large brushed flower design.
One of the rarest early New Jersey marks and one we have never had this one before. Horace Humiston and Henry Stockwell are both listed in the 1830 census of South Amboy Township. This one year mark of their short-lived partnership probably represents only one kiln firing. The cobalt blue floral decoration is important. Collectors of Troy, NY pottery will instantly recognize the floral as typical of Orcutt & Humiston wares. It is highly unusual to document the decorator of any piece of stoneware and here it can be unequivocally stated that Humiston himself decorated this particular jug. Also, either Humiston or Stockwell threw the jug as both were skilled potters. Beautiful mottled gray to brown speckled clay color. Original condition except for a pin head size flake on the top of the lip and stack mark on the side, created in the firing. 15" 1830 |
