Produced at the Fort Edward Pottery by Burtis Soper for his daughter. This piece is decorated with a painstakingly scribed and blue accented flower design. Then hand scribed around the base, "Julia F. Soper/Fort Edward, NY". This small churn is completed with a fitted original Albany glazed churn guide. This is probably the most unusual piece we have sold.
It truly reflects the potter's skills and imagination. This piece is referred to in William Ketchum's book - Potters & Potteries of New York State, page 255. Minor imperfections in the making. 7 3/4" 1870The churn is decorated with brush blue accents front and back and at the applied handles. Detail in the piece is so complete that the wooden plunger was made to reflect wear and stain from use actual.
Probably NYS origin. Possibly an end of day creation to show off the potter's skills. The churn is excellent. There is a very minor surface chip in the interior of the churn guide that may have occurred in making. 4 1/2" 1860The first: 4-hole with blue accents at the rim and Albany brown accent at the dished center hole. Hand signed in script on the bottom, "John Welch, 1844". Chips at the base and rim and a large missing piece that has been filled. 4" diameter.
The second: 4-hole with faint blue accent at the center hole. Old chips in the base and rim. 3 3/4" diameter. 1850Pottery stamp both on the front and back.

Glaze imperfections in the making including stone pings. Old wear and surface chip at the base. 9 1/2" 1800Brushed accents at the ears. The opposite side has an incised and blue filled flower & foliate design consistent with Joshua Letts, New Jersey pottery.
