Don't
be fooled by reproductions. |

This
jar is marked "WHITES UTICA" in an attempt to deceive you. Note the
unusual form. Most preserve jars would have a rim for a lid.
The
clay is very white and poorly potted. Notice the bright blue cobalt.
Look at the picture of the bottom. Note that
it is glazed. You will not see this in a period piece.
In the third photo, you can see how crudely
the ears have been formed.
If
this piece were a
legitimate reproduction, it could be marked by the maker's name such as:
R & B Dieboll, Washington, MI
or
Beaumont Pottery, York Maine
or
Salmon Falls Pottery

The 2
images on the right were scanned from the Montgomery Wholesale Liquidators
Catalog. These stoneware offerings are ALL REPRODUCTIONS. You will see these
items frequently selling as old in many online auctions. Please take note,
they are not old. The items were made in China and other countries, imported
to the U.S. originally sold as reproductions.

Here is a
photo of a piece someone recently sent us. She bought it from a dealer as
old, but may have some age, but it is probably an import and does not have
"Antique Stoneware Value".
Sorry, but
thanks for sending us the photo. |

Numerous customers have inquired of us
about a crock recently seen on an internet auction. Yes, it is a reproduction. It will
"ring" like fine china when struck. Also the interior and
exterior will have a ribbed appearance & not smooth as original 19th
century pottery. We have seen a similar items available from the "Repo
Depot" in Montgomery, NY. This company was in business before
the days of the internet in the 1980's. They published a CATALOG and also
advertised in all the antiques publications.
Any representation can be made when there
is no warranty or credibility involved in it's sale. Buyer beware!

If you have any "Mistakes" in
your own collection, we would like to have a photo so we can add it to our
"reproduction library."
As a service to
our customers, we feel it is important to help educate when we can. Keeping
the public aware of fakes is one way we feel we can help.

reproduction photos to:

Here's a piece we recently saved a customer from
buying.
The date should say 1976! |

The piece below sold
at an auction not too long ago. It is a fake. You really have to be
careful. Many people can be fooled. |
|
Someone "artistically"
added this bird to an old Whites Utica pitcher.
Also offered on an
internet auction.

This piece was seen
offered on an internet auction. Available in Antique Reproduction
Catalogs for less than $50
